Directed by James Hawes, One Life is based on the true story of British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton, as he looks back on his past efforts to save groups of Czech Jewish children, against incredible odds, from the Nazis in the late 1930’s. Anthony Hopkins plays Winton, in prosperous retirement in the 1980’s, whilst Johnny Flynn portrays him as a young activist. Helena Bonham Carter is mighty as his formidable mother Babette, who runs his campaign from London.
Simply told, with heartfelt directness, this film is a remarkable story of wartime Europe, postwar memory and quiet heroism.
