February 17 @ 7:30 pm
Following the Friday Film Club season’s theme of anti-heroes taking on “the man”, Jimmy Cliff is electrifying as Ivanhoe Martin, a country boy who comes to the city looking for work. He lands a record contract, cutting the eponymous track for an unscrupulous local producer who exploits him. After a bitter dispute, he resorts to petty crime to pay the bills, as his record tops the charts.
Director Perry Henzell’s all-Jamaican production portrays the vibrancy, violence and corruption of a country struggling to throw off it’s colonial shackles and boasts a killer soundtrack that put reggae on the world map.
Includes a live introduction to set the scene.
