Friday Film Club opens it’s doors for a new season with Jeff Nichols’ freewheeling account of the rise and fall of a Midwest bike gang, based on a book of images and interviews by Danny Lyon.
After a chance encounter at a local bar, Kathy (Jodie Comer) is inextricably drawn to Benny (Austin Butler), the newest member of motorcycle club The Vandals led by the enigmatic Johnny (Tom Hardy). Like the country around it, the club begins to evolve, transforming from a gathering place for local outsiders into a dangerous underworld of violence, forcing Benny to choose between Kathy and his loyalty to the club.
The outlaw appeal of the motorcycle gang – the machismo, the glinting chrome and the open road – has long held a seductive appeal for filmmakers and audiences alike. Whilst Nichols is clearly enamoured of the closed world he depicts, he also casts a critical eye over the myth of freedom and the emptiness under the grease and denim.
With excellent performances from the leads, The Bikeriders has the hallmarks of a future late-night classic.
Includes a live introduction to set the scene.
