Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself? This month’s Friday Film Club Horror Special is here to help.
The Substance is a 2024 body horror film following fading Hollywood star Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) who, after being fired by her producer (Dennis Quaid) due to her age, uses a black market drug that creates a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley). What could possibly go wrong?
This multi-award winner is a grisly fantasy-parable of misogyny and body-objectification, with writer-director Coralie Fargeat riffing on the crazy dysfunctional energy of Roger Vadim and Jane Fonda with lashings of Cronenberg, locating her horror in women’s own fear of their younger and older selves.
Audaciously gross and wickedly clever, this is a mirror-haunted fable about fame, self-hatred and the terror that accompanies an identity constructed on the backs of other people’s stares.
Oh and it’s bloody….very bloody
